Where Is Warm and Dry in June? Southern Europe Opens, Bali Dries Out

Sixteen places we track are warm and dry in June, and most of them are southern Europe. Dubai, Cyprus, Cape Verde and Los Angeles have no rain days; Bali just misses, but is far drier than in December.

At a glance

Which places are warm and dry in June?

Sixteen of the places we track pass our test in June: an average daytime high of at least 24°C and rain on no more than one day in ten, about three rain days in the month, over eleven years of daily weather. The list is mostly one region, and the change from May is southern Europe: Seville, Santorini, Crete, Lisbon, Antalya, Valencia and Madrid join as their rain days fall, Cabarete and Rio join, and Barbados and Mérida drop out.

Not dry in June

Athens, Rome and Barcelona are warm but still just over the line, with about 4 rain days each. Read the high column before you pick: the driest places are also some of the hottest, and our test only looks at average highs, so heatwave days will be above these figures.

Why is Bali not on the June list?

Because Bali's dry season still brings a few showers, and the Mediterranean in June brings almost none. Our test allows rain on at most one day in ten, about three rain days in June, and in the tropics it counts a rain day only from four millimetres of rain, so a passing drizzle does not count against Bali.

Set against December, June is a dry month: rain days fall from 17 to 22 of 31 in December to 4 to 9 of 30, and the millimetres fall by two thirds to four fifths. Lombok has the fewest rain days and Canggu the least rain; Ubud, inland, keeps the most. What this means for a plan: Bali in June is a good, mostly dry month with the occasional shower, not a month to avoid. Our guide to Bali by area shows the same curve for each part of the island, and Lombok is the drier choice if you want the fewest rain days; by July it makes our list. Two practical things our weather data does not capture: prices and crowds climb in July and August, and rice-field burning produces smoke in some parts of the island at some points in the year.

Is Thailand or Vietnam worth it in June?

Not for dry weather. Most of Thailand is in its rainy season, from Chiang Mai in the north to Phuket on the Andaman coast, and Ho Chi Minh City is in full wet season. Koh Samui is the exception, with far less rain than Phuket, and our Samui and Phangan guide explains why the Gulf stays lighter. Da Nang is the least wet of the mainland places but runs hot.

Which European places are actually good to work from in June?

The ones that are warm but not yet punishing. June is the month before the heat peaks, which is why it suits a working stay.

Lisbon and Málaga sit comfortably in the sweet spot. Valencia is a little warmer and still dry. Barcelona just misses our list on rain days. Seville and Athens are already hot in the afternoon, and July is hotter again (see July).

Which warm place suits a month-long stay in June?

Easy and mild: Lisbon and Málaga for a city base with a short beach trip. Cape Verde if you want warm weather and almost no rain, with the trade-off of an island lifestyle.

Island sun: Cyprus and Crete, warm with very little rain.

Dry-season Asia: Bali or Lombok, if you accept showers and book before the July and August peak.

Only with air conditioning: Dubai.

What about the Southern Hemisphere in June?

It is winter. Mauritius passes; our figures are for the island's drier west coast, and the centre and east are much wetter. Rio just makes the list, with exactly one rain day in ten. Cape Town is cool and wet, and Cairns, close and drier than its summer, does not pass.

How we built this list

Daily weather history from the Open-Meteo archive (temperatures and rain days) and monthly rain totals from CHIRPS (satellite and rain-gauge data; Canggu and Ubud keep Open-Meteo totals because CHIRPS reads too wet there against the Denpasar airport rain gauge) are grouped into month-of-year averages for each destination's coordinates over eleven years. A place is listed if its average June high is at least 24°C and rain falls on at most one day in ten, ordered by fewest rain days and then by the warmer high. A rain day is a day with at least two millimetres of rain, or four in the tropics, a cut-off we checked against rain gauges. It does not know prices, crowds, visas, festivals or air quality. See our data sources page for the method.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bali dry in June?

Dry compared with the rest of the year, yes. Uluwatu gets 72 mm, Canggu 69 mm and Ubud 103 mm in June, against 338, 288 and 328 mm in December. Showers still come on about 5 to 9 days, so it is not a rain-free month.

Is Thailand a good choice in June?

Mostly no. Chiang Mai has rain on about 16 of 30 days and 123 mm, Bangkok 169 mm and Phuket 303 mm. Koh Samui is the least wet of the group at 86 mm.

Is southern Europe too hot in June?

Some of it. Seville averages 33°C and Athens 30°C. Lisbon at 25°C and Málaga at 28°C are milder and still dry.

Is Dubai worth it in June?

Only if you can work indoors. The average high is 40°C with almost no rain, so the weather is hot and settled rather than pleasant.

Where in the southern hemisphere is dry and warm in June?

Little passes our test. Mauritius does, at 26°C with rain on about 1 of 30 days, and Rio just does, at 25°C with rain on about 3 of 30 days (exactly one day in ten). Cape Town is a cool 17°C with rain on about 10 of 30 days, and Cairns, at 25°C, is on the edge.
