Which places are warm and dry in August?

Look at the high before the rain. Five of the dry places (Dubai, Seville, Antalya, Madrid, Athens) average about 33°C or more, so their afternoons need planning. The July list tells nearly the same story.

Why does Cape Verde drop out in August?

Because its rain begins. In July Cape Verde is one of the driest places we track, and in August it has about 4 rain days of 31. The archipelago sits at the edge of the West African monsoon belt, so its short wet season starts while Europe is still at its driest.

It is still warm, and the rain falls in short bursts, so it is not a bad month. It is just no longer one of the driest. If you wanted Cape Verde for the dry weather, July is the month; October is drier again.

Which dry places are not too hot to work from?

Those that pass the test with a high under about 30°C, mostly on the Atlantic or on islands, where wind and sea take the edge off the afternoon.

Lisbon is the best all-round August city here: warm, close to rain-free, with good nomad infrastructure. Porto is the cooler second, and Santorini is the warm island version. Madeira is a better August than its wet, green reputation suggests. Málaga is the warm end of the group.

How hot is too hot in August?

Hot enough that the middle of the day is for indoors. These are average highs, so the hottest days sit above them.

Is Bali dry in August?

On the south coast and Lombok, yes: it is the driest month of their year.

Lombok makes the list above. Uluwatu just misses it, and Canggu has a few more showers. Ubud, inland, keeps its rain, and is no drier in August than in June. If you want to know what happens next, rain returns by September and builds into October. Our Bali by area guide compares the areas month by month.

Is Thailand worth it in August?

Not for dry weather. Chiang Mai is wetter than in July, and Koh Samui is the lighter side of Thailand. Nomads who stay in Asia in August usually go to Bali or Lombok.

Which places in the Americas pass in August?

Los Angeles and San Diego pass with almost no rain. Cabarete in the Dominican Republic and Rio both miss our line, with rain on about 5 of 31 days. Across the ocean, Paje on Zanzibar and Mauritius pass, though on small islands a weather model can miss part of the rain, and Mauritius' figures are for its drier west coast.

What would we pick for a month in August?

An easy month: Lisbon, or Porto if you want it cooler. Madeira or the Canary Islands for an island.

Heat with a sea nearby: Málaga or Valencia.

Asia: Lombok, or Uluwatu if a few showers and peak rents are fine.

Not at midday: Seville, Madrid, Antalya and Dubai.

How we built this list

Each place's August is an average of eleven years of daily Open-Meteo weather at its coordinates. Rain totals come from CHIRPS, except Canggu, Ubud and Paje, where CHIRPS reads too wet against local gauges. A place is listed when its August high averages 24°C or more and no more than one day in ten is a rain day (two millimetres, or four in the tropics). We sort by fewest rain days, then by the warmer high. Prices, crowds, visas and air quality are not in it; see the data sources page.

Where is warm but not too hot in August?

Lisbon (29°C), Santorini (29°C), Madeira (27°C), the Canary Islands (26°C) and Porto (25°C) all pass our dry test with highs under 30°C. Málaga (31°C) passes too, a little hotter.

Is Bali dry in August?

On the south coast and Lombok it is the driest month of the year. Uluwatu gets 17 mm with rain on about 4 of 31 days, Canggu 56 mm and Ubud 118 mm with rain on about 9 of 31 days. Lombok, at 10 mm and about 2 of 31 days, passes our test.

Is Spain too hot in August?

Inland, yes. Seville averages 37°C and Madrid 34°C in the afternoon, and Valencia is 31°C. The coast at Málaga (31°C) is a little milder.

Is Thailand a good choice in August?

Not for dry weather. Chiang Mai has 252 mm and rain on about 24 of 31 days. Koh Samui, on the Gulf side, is lighter at 75 mm and about 7 rain days.

Why is Cape Verde not on the August list?

Its rain starts. Cape Verde has almost no rain days in July and about 4 of 31 in August, with 63 mm for the month, so it misses our one-day-in-ten line.
