Nha Trang Weather by Month: The Long Dry Season and the Autumn Rains

Nha Trang is at its best from February to April (27° to 31° highs, 18 to 31 mm of rain) and soaked from October to December (316 to 450 mm). December is still wet, not the dry beach month it is sold as.

What is the weather in Nha Trang, in one minute?

Nha Trang is warm all year, and what changes is the rain. From February to April it is at its best: highs of 27°C to 31°C, nights of 22°C to 25°C and rain on 2 to 3 days a month. May to August is hotter and still fairly dry by Vietnamese standards. Then the wet season hits, and December is still part of it. Here is the whole year:

When is Nha Trang dry?

The dry stretch is long: January to August, with February to April the clearest part. February is the driest month (18 mm), March has 31 mm and April 26 mm, and cloud is at its lowest, 53 to 60 percent of the sky. Humidity sits at 75 to 80 percent from January to August, so the heat of May to August feels sticky even when it is dry.

January is the odd one out: 57 mm of rain on about 4 days and the coolest highs of the year (26°C), so it is a transition month more than a dry one. May to August adds heat, not rain: June is the hottest month at 33°C by day and 27°C by night, and rain stays at 50 to 68 mm. July and August are the months when Ho Chi Minh City is soaked and Nha Trang is not.

How bad are the October to December rains?

Bad enough to plan around. October has 330 mm on about 16 of 31 days, November 450 mm on about 15 of 30 days, and December 316 mm on about 11 of 31 days. Cloud covers 77 to 82 percent of the sky, highs drop to 26°C to 29°C and humidity stays at 82 percent or more. These are the heaviest months of the year, and the sea is rougher, so boat trips and island days are the first to go.

September, at 163 mm on about 13 days, is the lead-in and still usable. December is better than November but only just: it is not a dry month, whatever the beach-holiday posts say.

Nha Trang, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City in winter?

The coast is not one climate, and this is the trap. Da Nang peaks in October (883 mm, against 330 mm in Nha Trang), while Nha Trang peaks in November (450 mm). The central rains run on into December, when Ho Chi Minh City is already drying out, so a "Vietnam in December" plan can be right for one city and wrong for the next.

In December Nha Trang gets 316 mm, Da Nang 331 mm and Ho Chi Minh City 71 mm. By February and March both coastal cities are dry, but Ho Chi Minh City is hotter, with highs of 34°C to 35°C against 24°C to 29°C on the coast. What about the shoulder months?

April and May are the warm-up: 26 mm and 68 mm of rain and highs of 31°C to 32°C, still dry but hotter each week. September is the shoulder before the rains, still usable for a flexible stay. January is the shoulder after them: mostly dry, though three times wetter than February. December is not a shoulder at all; treat it as part of the wet season.

Who should come when?

Come between February and April for the best weather, or May to August if you like heat. Avoid October to December for a first long stay: three months of 316 to 450 mm is a lot of grey. If you are in southern Vietnam for the winter and want sea, Phu Quoc is much drier in December (89 mm) while the central coast is still wet.

How sure are these numbers?

They are month-of-year averages for one point at Nha Trang, from stored climate data (Open-Meteo archive and CHIRPS rain totals, 2015 to 2025), so any single year can be wetter or drier, and typhoon years can push the wet season earlier or later. Cloud is the average share of sky covered, not hours of sunshine. Rain days are the stored share of days with at least four millimetres (the tropical rule), times the days in the month, rounded to the nearest day. Other sites quote different numbers and even different wet seasons, because they use different stations and years.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Nha Trang?

March is the best balance in our data: a high of 29°C, 31 mm of rain and rain on about 2 days. February is slightly cooler and the driest at 18 mm, and April is warmer at 31°C.

When is the rainy season in Nha Trang?

September to December, peaking from October to December. Rain goes from 163 mm in September to 330 mm in October, 450 mm in November (the wettest month) and 316 mm in December. Rain falls on about 16 days in October and 15 in November.

Is Nha Trang good in December?

Not for a long stay. December still gets 316 mm of rain on about 11 of 31 days, with a high of 27°C and cloud over 79 percent of the sky. It is drier than November, but the dry season does not start until January or February.

Is Nha Trang dry in January?

Mostly. January has 57 mm of rain on about 4 days, a high of 26°C and lows of 22°C, which is the cool end of the year. It is a transition month, drier than Da Nang's 100 mm but not as dry as February.

Does it rain all day in the wet season, and can I work?

Our data does not say how long each rain lasts, only how many days get rain. In November rain falls on about 15 of 30 days and in December on about 11 of 31, so most weeks have both wet and dry days. Plan for three or four wet days a week in October and November, a good internet connection at your place, and a backup that is not a beach cafe.

How hot is Nha Trang in summer?

June is the hottest month with a high of 33°C and a low of 27°C. July and August are similar at about 33°C, with 50 to 56 mm of rain a month, which is far less than Ho Chi Minh City gets then.
