What is the climate of Mauritius, in one minute?
Warm all year, with a wet, humid summer and a drier, cooler winter. Rain follows the seasons much more than temperature does. Here is the year on the west coast:

Read the rain line: 224 mm in January against 24 mm in October. The temperature band moves only from 26° in July to 30° from December to March. This guide is for deciding which months to book; the Mauritius destination page is the place to check one month at a glance.

When is the best time to be in Mauritius?
October to December for most people, June to September if you prefer cool and dry. October is the driest month in our data, with 24 mm of rain and 28° highs. November (54 mm, 29°) and December (135 mm, 30°) get warmer, and December is where the summer rains start to build.
If you work all day with the windows open, the cool months are easier: highs of 26° to 27°, 28 to 51 mm of rain a month and humidity of 66 to 69 percent. May is a good shoulder, with 66 mm and 28° highs. Think twice about January to March, which are the hottest at 30° and also the wettest.
What does the cyclone season mean for a stay?
The official cyclone season, which is also the rainy season, runs from 1 November to 15 May, and in practice the risk is concentrated in January to March. It does not mean the whole summer is stormy. Most years pass without a cyclone near the island, and in a bad year it means a few days of heavy rain, strong wind and a closed-down island while a warning is in force, not weeks.
We hold no cyclone records, so we cannot say how often storms hit, and we will not invent a number. What our data shows is the wet pattern that goes with the season: January and February together hold more than a third of the year's rain. If you book one of those months, take a flexible booking, expect some days indoors and keep a day or two of slack around any flight. Mauritius runs a public warning system with four classes, so you will know in advance.
How dry and cool is the winter in Mauritius?
Dry and mild, and the opposite of a northern winter: more sun, lower humidity and the occasional cool evening. From June to September the nights fall to 20° to 21° and cloud covers about a third of the sky, against close to 60 percent in January and February. The cost is the wind, which is strongest in these months.
How humid and windy is it?
Humidity is 75 to 76 percent from January to March and under 70 percent from June to October, lowest in September at 66 percent. With a 30° high, January to March is when you will want air conditioning in the room you work in; from June to October you may not.
Wind on the west coast averages 22 to 23 km/h in June and July and falls to 16 km/h in November. We hold one point for Mauritius, so we cannot compare coasts. Local sources agree on the general picture: the north and west are sheltered, the east and south are windier, and the central plateau is cooler, wetter and often misty. Read our figures as the sheltered west. We also hold no sea-temperature record; the sources we read say only that the water stays warm all year.
What would we do?
For a month of work: October if you want the driest weather, November or December if you want it warmer with little rain, and June to September if you prefer cool and dry and can live with wind. Avoid January to March for a first stay unless you are happy with humid days, heavy showers and a cyclone warning that might disrupt your travel.
For comparison with other winter sun, see where is warm in December and where is warm in June, or the Cape Verde guide for a very different island pattern. This is a weather view only; it does not cover flights, cost of living or internet.
How sure are these numbers?
They are month-of-year averages for a single point on the west coast, from stored climate data (Open-Meteo, eleven years), so any single year can be wetter, windier or hotter. Grid data cannot see the mountain interior or the windward coast, and it says nothing about cyclones in a given year. A rainy day here is a day with at least four millimetres of rain.
