What is Málaga's weather like in winter, in one minute?
Málaga is one of the mildest winters on the European mainland, but mild is not warm. Days are sweater-and-sun weather, nights are cool, and rain is short and not frequent until March. Here is the year, with the winter months at both ends:

Read the temperature band first: it dips to 17° by day and 9° at night in January and climbs steadily from there. Then the rain line, which stays low from November to February and jumps in March. Cloud covers about 41 to 48 percent of the sky on an average winter day, so you get a lot of bright weather and some grey days, not the solid overcast of northern Europe. We hold no sunshine-hours figure, so we do not quote one.

Which winter month is best in Málaga?
November and February are the easy ones. November is the warmest of the five, at 20° and 13°, but it is wetter than people expect: 68 mm in the month, on about 4 days. February is the driest at 39 mm on about 3 rainy days, with a 17° high and a 10° low.
December and January are the cold middle: 18° and 17° by day, 11° and 9° at night, with 59 mm and 58 mm of rain on 4 and 5 days. March is the surprise. The high rises to 19° and the low to 11°, but it has the most rain of the five months, 76 mm on about 9 of 31 days. If you are choosing a month purely for dry weather, pick February, not March.
A rainy day here is a day with at least two millimetres, so a few drops do not count. In winter it rains rarely but in bursts: the mm figures are what a short spell of heavy rain brings.
Is Málaga the driest or warmest place in Spain in winter?
Neither. The Canary Islands, which are Spain too, are about three degrees warmer, and Valencia is drier. On the mainland, here is January next to our other Spanish and Atlantic points:
January averages, side by side
| Place | High | Low | Rain | Rain days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Malaga | 17° | 9° | 58 mm | 5 |
| Seville | 16° | 6° | 54 mm | 4 |
| Valencia | 16° | 7° | 32 mm | 2 |
| Lisbon | 15° | 9° | 91 mm | 7 |

Málaga has the warmest days of the four. Valencia is the driest, Seville has similar rain but colder nights, and Lisbon has more rainy days and the lowest highs. Warm days, nights well above Seville's and less rain than Lisbon are why Málaga is the best mainland base, though not the best at everything. Is it warm enough to work outside?
At midday on a sunny day in November or February, yes: a terrace table with a laptop is realistic at 17° to 20° if you are out of the wind. It is a sweater day, not a T-shirt day. By late afternoon it is cooler, and by evening you are in a jacket. The sea is cold, so do not plan to swim.
If you came from Southeast Asia, Málaga in January is not a tropical warm-up. For actual heat in winter, look at Canary Islands in January or where is warm in January.
Why are the flats cold when the days are mild?
This is the part the top results leave out. Daytime highs of 17° feel pleasant outside, but January nights fall to 9°, and many flats in southern Spain were built for summer, with thick walls to keep the heat out and no central heating. Tile floors stay cold, and a flat that gets no sun can feel colder than the street. Humidity is 67 to 73 percent from November to March, so damp walls and mould are worth checking for.
Practical points, which are advice and not data from our tables:
- Ask the landlord how the flat is heated before you pay a deposit. A reversible air-conditioning unit, a plug-in electric heater or nothing are all possible, and the answers are very different in January.
- Look at which way the windows face. A flat with sun for part of the day is a different winter from one that never gets any.
- Look for damp on the walls and ceilings of the bathroom and bedroom, and ask about the winter electricity bill.
- Plan some working time in cafes and coworking spaces, which are heated, for the coldest weeks.
Should you stay in Málaga for the whole winter?
For November to February, if you want a mainland base with a real city, trains and an airport, yes. The weather is decent on most days and the flat is a problem you can solve by choosing well. For March it depends on your tolerance for a wet month. If you want steadier nights on an island, see Madeira vs the Canary Islands in winter; for a wetter and cooler mainland alternative, see our Lisbon guide.

How sure are these numbers?
They are month-of-year averages for one point at Málaga's coordinates, from stored climate data (Open-Meteo archive and CHIRPS rain totals, 2015 to 2025). A single winter can be warmer, colder or much wetter than the average, and the hills behind the city can be a few degrees cooler than the coast. Cloud is the average share of sky covered through the day, not hours of sunshine.
