Read the temperature bands first: they swing from 29° in January to 14° in July. Then the rain line, which is the surprise: it never gets near zero, so no month is dry. Unlike a tropical city, Buenos Aires has no wet and dry season; the line only sags from June to September, to 47 to 78 mm, against 94 to 122 mm in the rest of the year. Is Buenos Aires too hot in January?

It can be. January has a high of 29°C, a low of 21°C and humidity near 67 percent, so a 29°C day feels heavier than the number. February is similar (28°C and 20°C, with 105 mm of rain), and December is a touch cooler (27°C and 19°C).

The upside is light. January has about 38 percent cloud cover, the lowest of the year, so the heat comes with sun. Storms are the other part: 99 mm in January, but on only about 7 days of the month. The usual pattern is a hot day, a storm in the afternoon or evening, and then clear again. Do not plan around "rain every day"; plan around a flat that stays cool.

Many locals leave in January and parts of the city quieten down. For somewhere else warm at that time, see where is warm in January or December.

What is autumn like, March to May?

March is still summer in practice: a high of 25°C, a low of 19°C and the wettest month of the year, 122 mm. April is the sweet spot: a high of 22°C, a low of 15°C and 116 mm, though humidity rises to 76 percent. By May it is 18°C by day and 11°C at night, and a jacket is back in your bag. If you want to walk and work outside without the air conditioning on, late March and April are the best of the year.

How cold is winter, June to August?

It is the cool, grey part of the year. Highs are 14°C to 16°C and lows 8°C to 9°C, with July the coolest month. Cloud cover is above 50 percent and humidity near 80 percent, which makes it feel colder and damper than the thermometer says. Heating in older flats is often weak, so ask about it.

It is also the drier half of the year: 47 mm in June, the lowest of the year, then 70 mm in July and 78 mm in August, against 99 to 122 mm from December to April. The sky is greyer, but the rain is less.

When is spring, September to November?

September is cool at 18°C with 73 mm of rain, and it warms fast. October has a high of 21°C and a low of 13°C with 94 mm, and November reaches 25°C with 100 mm and humidity back down to 66 percent. October and November are as good as April, and they come before the summer heat.

How does it compare with Rio and Florianópolis?

Buenos Aires is a temperate city, not a tropical one. Rio de Janeiro is warm all year, with a wet summer and a dry winter; Buenos Aires has the cool winter and the even rain. Florianópolis shares the same southern summer but is far wetter in it.

Read the January and July rows against each other: Buenos Aires is the coolest of the three in July, and much drier than Florianópolis in January.

Who should come when?

For a month of work, October and November, or March and April: highs of 21°C to 25°C, lows of 13°C to 19°C and neither extreme. If you want summer and can live with it, December to February works with air conditioning, and you should expect storms rather than a rainy season. If you want the least rain, June is the driest month, at the cost of grey skies and a 15°C high.

What would we do?

Stay in October and November, and again in March and April. Treat January and February as the months to come only if you want the heat, and then pick the flat for the cooling. July is for cool-weather people who do not mind grey.

How sure are these numbers?

They are month-of-year averages for a single point near the city, from stored climate data (Open-Meteo archive and CHIRPS rain totals, 2015 to 2025), so any single year can be much wetter or drier. Rain days are the stored share of days with at least two millimetres, times the days in the month, rounded to the nearest day. Other sources put February as the wettest month, where in our data it is March, and the whole year runs close together, so treat the order of the wet months as loose.
