What is the best month to visit Athens?

May. In our data it is the month that is both warm and dry: a 25° high, a 16° night, 22 mm of rain and cloud under 40 percent. April is close for rain (23 mm) but only 20° by day. By June the high is already 30°.

If you need to fix dates, aim for late April to the end of May. For the other warm and dry places that month, see where is warm in May.

Is Athens too hot in summer?

For desk work, July and August are hard. They average 34° and 33° highs, with nights near 23°, and those are monthly averages, so the hottest afternoons are well above them. June (30°) is workable with air conditioning, and it is also the last month before the heat settles in.

The sky matters too: cloud cover is only 7 percent in July, the clearest month of the year in our data. Plenty of people leave for the islands or the Atlantic coast in these months. Where is warm in July shows the cooler places that are still dry.

Is September better than August?

Yes, for working. September still has a 29° high and a 19° night, and rain is 32 mm, and the nights drop to 19°, which makes evenings easier than in August (33°, 23° nights). October (23°, 27 mm) is the best autumn month for a stay; see where is warm in September and October.

What is winter in Athens like?

Cooler than its image. January has a 12° high, a 5° night and 53 mm of rain. February is the best winter month: 14° by day and the driest of the cool months at 28 mm. March is 16° with 48 mm. November is the wettest month overall at 58 mm, with December close at 57 mm.

Athens apartments are built for summer, so winter flats can feel cold when it is sunny outside. Ask about heating before you book. If your goal is winter warmth, Athens is not it; see the warmest places in Europe in winter. A warmer Spanish comparison is Seville, which is 3 to 5 degrees warmer by day from December to February.

What do the nights, the sun and the humidity do?

Nights decide how a hot month feels. In July and August the low is 23°, so a flat without air conditioning stays warm well after dark. In January it is 5°, cold enough that indoor work needs heating. Humidity swings with the seasons: it is 76 percent in December and drops to 43 percent in July, so the summer heat is dry heat, which is easier to live with than the humid heat of the Thai coast but still tiring by mid-afternoon.

The sun is the reliable part. Cloud cover is 7 percent in July and 9 percent in August, and even the greyest months, January and December, sit near 48 to 49 percent. That is far brighter than northern Europe in the same months, which is why a cool Athens winter can still be a pleasant one for walking and working from a cafe.

Which months for a long stay?

This is a weather view only. It does not include rent, air conditioning, festivals or crowds, and we hold no data on them.

How sure are these numbers?

They are month-of-year averages for one point in Athens from stored climate data (Open-Meteo archive, 2015 to 2025), so any single year can be wetter or drier. Airport stations and other sites quote slightly different figures. Cloud is the average share of sky covered, not hours of sunshine.
