When is the dry season, really?
Later than the tourism calendar suggests. High season is December to April, but in our data the rain does not drop until February. December gets 107 mm and January 115 mm, so the first winter weeks are mixed, with clouds and showers that pass. From February the rain falls to 42, 40 and 48 mm, and cloud is at its lowest, about a third of the sky.
That is the clean window for a long stay: February to April, with highs of 27° to 29° and nights of 23° to 25°. April is the hottest of the three, and May (82 mm, 30°) starts the build-up to summer. To compare warm winter bases, see where is warm in February.
Is it too hot and humid in summer?
For a month-long stay, humidity matters more than the temperature. From June to October the high is 29° to 31° and the low 25° to 26°. That is not extreme heat, but nights stay warm, laundry does not dry and air conditioning runs all day. If you work from a laptop and need a comfortable room, pick February to April or accept a higher electricity bill in summer. If you do not mind heat, July is a lighter break (81 mm) between the two wet peaks of June and August to October.
What about hurricane season?
The rainy season and the Atlantic hurricane season overlap: the hurricane season officially runs from June to November, and the Yucatán coast is in its path. Our data shows what that period looks like for rain: June and August to November each get 188 to 245 mm, on 11 to 13 days a month in June, August, September and October, against 2 days in February to April. That is the wet half of the year, not a storm forecast.
We hold monthly rain, cloud and wind averages, not storm tracks, so we cannot tell you the chance of a hurricane in a given month. Rain on its own does not mean a storm. If you book in the season, book flexible, watch the official forecasts for the week you travel and know where your accommodation stands in a power cut. Seaweed (sargassum) is not in our numbers either, so this page makes no claim about it.
How different is it from Mérida and Mexico City?
Very. Mérida, inland in the Yucatán, is hotter by day and drier in February, and Mexico City is high and cool, with a different dry season:

The Mexico City guide shows the capital, and the best time to go to Mexico puts five bases side by side. For the Pacific side, see Puerto Escondido. For a circuit, the usual choice is the coast from February to April and somewhere higher when the humidity peaks.
What would we do?
Come from February to April. If you must come in December or January, expect it to be warm and pleasant (26° to 27°) but wetter than the name "dry season" suggests, and busy. May is the shoulder, with the heat building. June to October is wet and humid, and the core of hurricane season. November is still wet while highs fall to 28°, which surprises people who expect the dry season to start.
This page covers weather only. It does not cover prices, internet, safety or nearby towns such as Tulum, which have their own numbers.
How sure are these numbers?
They are month-of-year averages for one point on the coast, from stored climate data (Open-Meteo archive and CHIRPS rain totals), so any single year can be wetter or drier, and a few kilometres inland or along the beach can differ. Cloud is the average share of sky covered, not hours of sunshine. A rainy day here is a day with at least 4 mm because the area is tropical.
