Is Bangkok or Chiang Mai better for weather in December?

Chiang Mai, if you count cool evenings as a plus, and the gap is mostly the night. In our 11-year data Bangkok runs 31° by day and 22° at night in December. Chiang Mai runs 27° by day and 17° at night. Rain is close to zero in both: 9 mm in Bangkok and 16 mm in Chiang Mai.

That makes December the gentlest month for both, and the one where the usual "Bangkok is hot and humid" line is least true. If you want to work on a terrace in the evening, Chiang Mai's 17° night means a light layer. If you want the evening warm, Bangkok.

November is the month that does not belong to the dry season yet: 77 mm in Bangkok and 61 mm in Chiang Mai. By December the rain has gone from both.

How bad is the air in December?

Worse than the "cool season" label suggests, in both cities. We model PM2.5 from the Copernicus CAMS air-quality data. For the last three Decembers, Bangkok averaged 36, 27 and 31, and Chiang Mai 21, 29 and 27. The WHO daily guideline is 15, and in December 2025 every day was above it in both cities.

The difference is on the very bad days: Bangkok had 10, 3 and 8 days above 35 in those three Decembers, while Chiang Mai had none, 5 and none. So Chiang Mai was cleaner in two of the three Decembers, but not in December 2024, when it averaged 29 against Bangkok's 26 and had more days above 35. It is a small edge, not a different category. One honest caveat: this model reads low against ground stations on bad days, so these are floors, not forecasts.

What happens in January and February?

This is where the two cities split, and where the December decision is really made. Bangkok's air is at its worst in January: modelled averages of 67, 54, 41 and 35 over four Januaries, with February between 25 and 83. It eases from March.

Chiang Mai goes the other way. Its January was lighter than Bangkok's in all four years (18 to 31). February (21 to 32) is still lighter than Bangkok's on average, but it is when days above 35 come back (2 to 13 a month), and the burning season peaks in March and April (March averaged 26 to 44). The full picture is on the Chiang Mai burning season guide and the Bangkok air quality guide.

What does this mean for a work week?

Air matters most if you work from a flat with the windows open, or run outside. In December the practical difference is small, so choose on the evenings, the neighbourhood and the cost of the flat, not on the air. In January, choose by the air: if you are in Bangkok, a place with a sealed room and a purifier changes more than the city does. We do not rate any city as safe or unsafe here; we only give the modelled levels and the guideline they are measured against.

When should you leave each city?

Chiang Mai by the end of January, to be safe; Bangkok has no clean month between December and March, so the question is how long you accept it. Use December and early January in Chiang Mai, then move before February's first heavy days. A small share of years show a first bad week in January, so a flexible ticket is worth more than a fixed one.

If your plan is the whole winter in Thailand, a common split is Chiang Mai for the cool months and then somewhere with cleaner air from February. Our month-by-month air comparison shows which bases stay clean in those months.

Which one for a month of remote work?

For a month starting December 1: Chiang Mai, if you are fine with cool evenings and will move by February. Bangkok, if you want a city that works year-round, with stronger infrastructure, and accept hazier air in January. If air is your first concern, neither is the answer in January, and the escape list is the better starting point.

How sure are these numbers?

Temperature and rain are month-of-year averages for one point near each city, from stored climate data (Open-Meteo archive and CHIRPS rain totals, 2015 to 2025). PM2.5 is a model value from CAMS via Open-Meteo for 2023 to 2026, on a grid roughly 45 km wide; it reads low against ground monitors on the worst days. Any one year can differ. A rainy day is a day with four millimetres of rain or more.
